Travel

Plane and train

Groningen lays in the North of the Netherlands. Whilst it has its own airport, the most convenient connection is to Amsterdam Schiphol.

Two train services an hour run between Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and Groningen, of which one is direct. The journey time is 2 hours.

If you come from Germany, follow the travel advice that Deutsche Bahn is giving you. Travelling through Leer is a possibility for many arriving from the North of Germany, but be advised that there is a train-replacement bus service between Leer and Groningen. This bus is very reliable but only runs every 2 hours.

The walk from Groningen Main Station (Hoofdstation) to the city centre is approximately 15 minutes.

Car

The city centre of Groningen is designed to be as car-free as possible. That being said, there is one underground parking garage close-by the centre and the university. Click here to check the website of Q-Park for more information on availability.

Accommodation

There are no pre-reserved rooms available for conference attendees. We recommend to book your accommodation as soon as possible, due to higher than usual rates in Groningen at that time.

All well-known hotel booking platforms allow you to book hotels in Groningen. Similarly, AirBnB and comparable sites work, too. We would advise to use those platforms and book the best available option for you.

The University of Groningen has agreements with some hotels, however, allowing you to stay at a reduced rate. Please make sure to mention that you are attending a conference organised by the University of Groningen and include the link to the conference programme.

Please check the online booking platforms first, however, as they may still be cheaper than our corporate rates.

The following hotels have an agreement with the university (but are not directly aware of this conference):

  • Flonk hotel/Best Western Hotel Groningen Centre: 25% discount
  • Leonardo Hotel Groningen City Center: €119 per night incl. breakfast
  • Martini Hotel/Budgett hostels: €125 per night incl. breakfast
  • Schimmelpenninck Huys: €105 per night excl. breakfast
  • The Market Hotel: €172 per night incl. breakfast
  • Hotel NH Groningen: up to 20% discount

Food and drink

Groningen features a wide variety of cuisines and many restaurants can cater to allergies, too.
